Get Thee to SCC for the Shakespeare Festival

2 years ago 29

Three-plus years past the pandemic’s devastating arrival, there no longer is a question whether the Sacramento Shakespeare Festival is to be, or not to be.

It assuredly is returning, for a 56th summer, starting Friday, July 7 in the Art Court Theatre in the Performing Arts Center at Sacramento City College (3835 Freeport Blvd.). The chosen play, which runs through July 23, is probably one you are at least nominally familiar with.

“It’s 1266 in Scotland, and the Vikings are being sent home,” the festival’s promotion reads. “The resulting vacuum creates a struggle for power in Scotland, and the respected general Macbeth is on the rise. Three witches tell Macbeth that he will be King of Scotland, and, encouraged by his wife, Macbeth kills the King, becomes the new King, and starts to kill his rivals out of paranoia. And civil war erupts to stop him.”

Sounds rather violent, but that comes with the Elizabethan territory.

The cast, which includes more than two dozen actors, includes Kathleen Poe as Macduff, Jackie Martin as Lady Macbeth and Brandon Lancaster as Macbeth.

“Macbeth” showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. on July 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22, and at 2 p.m. on the run’s three Sundays: July 9, 16 and 23. Tickets are $18 general; $15 for seniors, military members, veterans and persons with disabilities; and $10 for students.
