More than 100 women wore whimsical headpieces at the “Headdress Ball,” presented by Mercy Children’s Hospital Guild at the Senator Hotel in February 1954. A Sacramento Bee article from March 2 of that year stated that birds in gilded cages, a model of the Emerald City of Oz and a replica of the capitol dome all perched atop women’s heads.
